Discover Hidden Profits in "Spare Change" Time

- by Jim Edwards

I Gotta Tell You Ezine
-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Fact: Take the spare change out of your pocket every night
and put it in a child's piggy bank. At the end of a year you
will have at least a hundred dollars to spend as you wish.

Now take this same principle and discover the huge payoff in
the "spare change" time you've been wasting all these years.

How often do you sit in front of your computer and wait?

Everyone waits for the computer to reboot, restart, unlock,
"scandisk", "defrag", finish printing, download a file from
the Internet or generally accomplish tasks that have you
sitting twiddling your thumbs for at least 60 to 90 seconds
or more.

The shocking truth is that those one, two and three minute
nuggets of time contain the seeds for accomplishing all the
tasks you never seem to have enough minutes in the day to
finish.

Computers represent a double-edged sword. On the one hand,
they are supposed to save us time by efficiently helping us
with big tasks such as balancing our checkbooks, running our
businesses, and doing our taxes.

In reality, it seems the time computers save you gets sucked
right back up in time-consuming tasks such as installing
software, scanning for viruses and waiting for the computer
to restart!

Think about the spare change in the piggy bank example. Now
use that same principle to your advantage by developing an
awareness of how you spend your "pocket change" time in
front of the computer every day.

Small bits of wasted time add up quickly over the course of
a day, week, year - all of it in 2 to 3 minute increments.
Fifteen wasted minutes a day equals well over 1 ½ productive
weeks wasted per year!

Take this "one-day challenge".

Today, try these alternatives to sitting and watching the
"hourglass" on your monitor while waiting for your computer
to finish a task!

~ Organize your desk
~ Sharpen your pencils
~ Make a quick phone call
~ Check your "to-do" list; if you don't have a "to-do" list
make one
~ Write a fast note to a friend
~ Put in a load of laundry
~ Go to the bathroom
~ Get another cup of coffee
~ Pay a bill
~ Catch up your checkbook entries
~ Pick up your office
~ Brainstorm an idea
~ Stand up and stretch
~ Day-dream for about a happy thought for 90 seconds!

Carefully watch how much time you spend in front of the
computer waiting for it to do something and then see how
many things you can accomplish with that time.

Nothing could reward you more than developing a
consciousness about how you spend those spare moments that
add up to enough time to write a book, take a trip with your
family or take positive actions that will change your life
forever.

Use your "spare change" time to accomplish the things you
claim you never find time to finish!

3 Ways To STOP Affiliate Link "Hijackers"

By Jim Edwards

(c)2004 Jim Edwards - all right reserved
Ebook Affiliate Program

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Let's face the facts!

Almost everyone online today is looking to make or save a
buck any way they can. In the past, most of the people who
clicked on your affiliate links used to purchase without a
second thought... but, as times get tougher online, it seems
a growing number won't!

As money gets tighter and product prices rise, people who
know how to manipulate the system will sometimes replace
your affiliate ID with theirs and "hijack" your commissions.

Here's an example:

Let's say your affiliate link is
www.ebookaboutcats.com/?live-well.

Say the highjacker uses the affiliate ID of captain-hook.
What he would do is replace your ID with his, and buy from
the URL www.ebookaboutcats.com/?captain-hook.

The bottom line: the hijacker puts your money in his pocket.

In other cases, they can't stand the thought of you "making
money off them" so they bypass you by simply chopping off
the end of your affiliate link that contains your ID.

Instead of buying from www.ebookaboutcats.com/?live-well,
the bypasser will simply "chop off" the affiliate ID at the
end and simply buy from the plain URL www.ebookaboutcats.com
--without your affiliate ID attached!

Either way, you get cheated out of your rightful commission.

To help you fight these affiliate link hijackers I offer a
couple of my best (proven and battle tested) tips, which
will at least confuse these "hijackers" and, in many cases,
often defeat and disarm them completely.

Side Note: If someone really, really wants to steal your
affiliate commission, they will find a way; however, most
hijackers are just opportunists who will only act if they
see an easy buck.

The first and cheapest way to hide your affiliate links is
using a javascript redirect page. This is where you hide
your affiliate link in a page on your site using a simple
javascript that redirects people to your affiliate link.

It works great not to expose your "naked" affiliate link in
your actual email messages and ezine ads, but, once people
get redirected to the true affiliate link, many affiliate
programs expose the affiliate link along with your ID in the
browser address bar.

Here's an example of a redirect script in action.
Click => http://www.ebookfire.com/esejs.html

Notice how the link takes you to a page where you can see my
affiliate ID, ebookfire, in your web browser's address bar.

Like it or not, someone can replace my ID with theirs and
"hijack" the commission... but at least the redirect script
keeps them from immediately seeing my "naked" affiliate link
(http://hop.clickbank.net/?ebookfire/ebksecrets) when I
publish it in my newsletter, email, or on my website.

You can get free redirect scripts just about anywhere you
find free javascripts. Here is the script I use
http://www.ebookfire.com/jrs.shtml.

A better way to hide your affiliate links is using a zero-
frame or "invisible" frame that masks the affiliate link by
making it appear you are sending people to a page on your
website. In reality, you are actually sending them to your
affiliate link.

This is the technique used by those "sub-domain" redirect
services that provide you with urls like
http://ese.ebookfire.net.

While giving someone a link like that is much better than
using a "naked" affiliate link such as
http://hop.clickbank.net/?ebookfire/ebksecrets, there is a
problem. As soon as someone does a "view >> source" in their
web browser they'll see your naked affiliate link plain as
day... which instantly blows your cover!

Currently the best way to protect your affiliate commissions
from ruthless hijackers is to use a combination of a zero-
frame page along with URL encryption. This involves sending
someone to URL that looks like a page on your site, but
actually pulls in your affiliate link like those "sub-
domain" services. However, there's one critical
difference...

If someone does a "view >> source" in their browser, you
have added protection in that all they will see is a jumble
of computer code instead of your naked affiliate link.

Check out this example of a zero-frame with URL encryption
in action.
Click => http://www.ebookfire.com/ese.html

Side Note: Beware of cloaking scripts that use javascript to
mask your affiliate link because they could malfunction in
some web browsers.

Here's the bottom line: if you are going to sell through
other people's affiliate programs, never send a "naked"
affiliate link... you're just asking for people to hijack or
bypass you if you do.

If you want to get paid more often through your affiliate
links, make sure it's not obvious you're referring people to
an affiliate link. If they can't easily see how to hijack or
bypass your link, a lot more people who would have taken the
money out of your pocket will just go ahead and buy through
your link - which is, after all, the whole point! :-)

3 Secrets to "Striking it Rich" in Cyberspace

- by Jim Edwards

(c) Jim Edwards - All Rights reserved
Ebook Affiliate Program
=====================================

In the few seconds it takes you to read this another domain
name gets registered at www.NetworkSolutions.com, the
Internet's oldest and largest domain name registrar.

Everyone from industrial giants to corner flower shops
currently wants to stake a profitable claim in cyberspace.

The lure of low startup costs compared to brick-and-mortar
operations and the promise of high rewards draws an ever-
swelling crowd of merchants to the online marketplace.

Yet despite the optimism statistics tell us that 80% of
these "e" businesses will fail within their first 12 months
of operation.

People from all over the country ask me what it takes to
succeed in the e-commerce world once they've completed the
basic steps for getting online.

The following three keys virtually *guarantee success* for
any online enterprise.

The First Key:

A Quality product or service with highly evident and readily
understood benefits for consumers.

If your product or service does not represent the highest
quality and value possible, and if consumers don't
understand exactly why they should buy from you, the speed
of the Internet will just expose your shortcomings to the
marketplace that much quicker.

In the offline world a product's benefits, not the features,
cause consumers to make buying decisions.

A man doesn't buy a car with a 5 liter engine because of the
horsepower, he buys it for the feeling of supremacy and
control he thinks it will give him.

Kids don't want a 1000mHz computer for computing power in
doing homework, they want to play the latest games.

The Internet magnifies this "what's in it for me" benefits-
driven evaluation by consumers.

Products or services presented with readily understood,
self-serving benefits for consumers sell best online (and
off).

The Second Key:

An excellent website that loads fast, provides pertinent
information to targeted consumers, and allows them to make
online purchases quickly and securely.

Your website should: · Load fast by making conservative use
of graphics. (Go to yahoo.com for an excellent example.)

· Provide exactly the information your potential customers
want and need.

· Make it extremely easy for surfers to navigate your site
and find exactly what they want.

· Look good on both the Netscape and Internet Explorer web
browsers at various screen resolutions (640x480, 800x600,
etc.).

The Third Key:

Consistent, targeted website traffic by consumers capable of
buying your product or service.

Imagine buying a 50 foot billboard and, instead of putting
it out by the highway, you hid it in your basement.

Nobody would see it!

The same thing happens if you don't actively and
continuously promote your website to attract visitors.

With its incredible speed and communications power, the
Internet acts as a magnifying glass for any organization's
strengths and weaknesses. E-commerce, e-mail, and a website
won't do the job of marketing, selling, and customer service
for any company.

They will, however, help every organization perform all of
those business functions better, faster, and less
expensively with the real and tangible result of "striking
it rich" in cyberspace!

Busting Online Copyright Thieves

- by Jim Edwards

(c) Jim Edwards - All Rights reserved
I Gotta Tell You Newsletter
=====================================

How safe is anyone's copyright online?

Well imagine my surprise when I clicked on a website link to
discover that someone had not only copied my website to
their server - but was selling my ebook and undercutting me
in the process! Some dishonest person operating from Eastern
Europe had literally stolen my entire business and I
discovered it only by sheer luck.

After some very lengthy and threatening emails I got them
shut down, but the question remains, how safe is your
copyright online and what can you do to protect it?

Traditionally written works have enjoyed copyright
protection not only through the rule of law, but also
because of the physical difficulty in stealing another
person's work. Let's face it, photocopying a 200 page book
rates about as much fun as watching paint dry and at 5 cents
a page you're talking a quick ten dollar printing bill.

If you steal someone's book, print up a thousand copies and
try to get it onto the local bookstore's shelves, the
chances of getting caught rank pretty high.

But the online world has changed those rules and physical
safeguards significantly. The Internet, email and the Web
make it easier than ever to steal someone else's work. With
the most basic skills and a few mouse clicks, someone can
take your book, your website, and along with it weeks,
months, and even years of your hard work.

Though intellectual property and international copyright
laws apply to online works, enforcement of those laws is
expensive and, in many cases, hard to enforce.

Well don't despair, you do have options if you find someone
has violated your copyright online. Anytime I find someone
violating my copyright, which isn't very often, I take these
three steps in rapid-fire fashion.

First, make 100% sure the other person realizes they have
violated your copyright. You can send them a nice but firm
note telling them to stop whatever activity violates your
copyright. If that doesn't work move on to step two.

Second, once you know with 100% certainty they understand
they have violated your copyright, yet refuse to respond or
stop, you need to shut them down by eliminating their
ability to do business!

Send them an email with a carbon copy sent to their Internet
Service Provider (ISP), their credit card processor, their
web hosting company, and even the company that sold them
their domain name.

Finally, follow this email up with a hard copy letter to
each party sent via registered mail. In the email and letter
detail exactly how they have blatantly violated your
copyright and you want them to desist immediately.

By taking this approach you can often just bypass the
offending party because the companies enabling them to
transact business don't want any trouble. If you can show
copyright violation they will shut the perpetrator down to
avoid getting sued themselves.

Though not foolproof, this strategy can help you when facing
down a blatant online copyright violator. Just remember to
act quickly, thoroughly and don't hesitate to contact your
attorney for advice.

Author's Note: By no means let this article dampen your
enthusiasm for operating your business or selling your ebook
online!

In my opinion there is no better way to make a living!

Your copyright is basically as safe online as it is offline.
However, if a sneak thief entered your home - you'd call the
cops. Well, now you know what to do if a sneak thief ever
gives you trouble online!

Let's Get One Thing Straight About
Being A Published Author

- by Jim Edwards and David Garfinkel
© 2004 - All Rights reserved
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Just for fun, evaluate the following statement:

"Most people want to write a book and get it published, but
that's simply impossible 99% of the time."

Is the above statement true?

Not exactly. What's true is that most people THINK they
can't write a book and get it published. And while that's a
widely-held belief, just the opposite is true.

In fact, it's easier to write and get published today than
ever before - especially thanks to the ebook "revolution."
The field of ebooks is literally wide open for all who are
interested - including, perhaps, you!

What does it take to write and publish your own ebook?

Three things:

1) A TOPIC you are interested in that others would also like
to know more about.

2) The DESIRE to get the ebook written (note - you can write
it yourself, but you don't have to. There are other proven
and simple ways to get your ebook written and published for
you.)

3) A simple, one-page, "sales letter" WEB SITE to sell the
ebook.

Does it take a lot of money or any special aptitudes? Oddly
enough, not really. You have to be willing to take action,
certainly, and learn as you go, but there are no special
educational, financial or talent requirements to become a
successful ebook author.

The truth is, it costs very little to get started. You can
get a domain registered and online for as little as $9 to
start and $6 a month for website hosting.

In fact, there are actually six ways you can create an ebook
without ever writing a word of it - so you don't need to be
a skilled writer. We'll tell you about one of them,
in-depth, right now.

Think of a topic you know something about that you'd like to
write an ebook on.

Once you have that topic in mind, then all you need to do is
write a list of questions other people would pay to get the
answers to... give that list to a friend... have the friend
call you on the phone and ask you those questions... record
the call... have the recording transcribed... and edit the
transcription!

Presto - you've just created a "meaty" ebook fast! (Yes, it
really is that simple!)

By the way, if you don't want to transcribe or edit the
ebook yourself, you can get both of those things done for
you for surprisingly little money... as little as a few
hundred dollars, total, in many cases.

That's how we wrote our most recent ebook.

As authors ourselves, we came up with a list of questions,
got on the phone, recorded the answers, and had the entire
4 1/2 hour conversation transcribed. Using this phone call -
transcription - edit route we created an ebook in about a
week. It cost us a total of $163 to produce it. (We hired
out the transcription, and did the editing ourselves.)

So far we've spent *zero* money on advertising and, as we
write this article today, we've sold over $49,683 worth of
that ebook in less than six months!

We're not unique in that way. We know many others who have
successfully published ebooks - including another small
publisher who has used this exact same method to create
dozens of ebooks.

If you can clearly understand a specific problem, want, need
or desire of a large enough target audience and then create
a publication that helps them get what they want, you stand
to make a lot of money and help a great number of people at
the same time.

If there ever was a "golden age" of publishing, NOW is the
time. The truth of the matter is, today anyone can become a
published author with an ebook in less than a couple of
weeks. Between us, we have 11 ebooks online and we're
making money every day, even as you read this.

You can do the same. Opportunity awaits you right now.
It's never been easier to seize the day and go for your
dream - become a published author!

The Top Seven Mistakes eBook Authors Make

-By Jim Edwards and David Garfinkel

© 2004 Jim Edwards and David Garfinkel
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

eBooks are the hottest thing going on the Web right now!

Authors with the entrepreneurial instinct are making
anywhere from a few hundred to tens of thousands of dollars
per month - that's right, per month - by selling ebooks
online.

Why are some authors doing so much better than others?
We've discovered seven key mistakes that most ebook authors
make (and in doing so, hold themselves back from major
success):

1. They don't write to a specific, target audience.

The biggest mistake most ebook authors make is they don't
clearly define, identify and visualize who they are selling
their ebook to. On the Web, to be successful, you must
write to a specific group of people who have specific
interests. Make sure that you know exactly who is going to
buy your ebook, and where you can find them online.

2. They don't automate as many of their business activities
as possible.

Selling ebooks, though it is highly profitable, is not a
business where you make hundreds of dollars per sale.

Automate everything you can - credit card processing, ebook
delivery, as much technical support as possible. If you
can't automate a function, delegate it to someone else.

3. They don't have a compelling title for their ebook.

Use words that convey the benefit of what's in the ebook, as
well as words your audience is familiar with.

A bad title for an ebook: "Online Marketing for Newbies." A
good title for the same ebook: "97 Ways to Promote Your
Website - No Experience Required."

4. They try to cover too much ground.

Many ebook authors convey a lot of information but don't
cover anything in-depth. As a result, they never fully
explain anything in enough detail to provide any useful
value to their readers. This is a very bad mistake to make,
especially when it comes to how-to ebooks, which happen to
be the best type to write.

5. They are not proactive in their marketing.

It would be nice if marketing for your ebook simply happened
on its own - but it doesn't. You have to do it yourself.
After you've promoted your ebook to the people on your own
mailing list (if you have one), then you have to contact
other Website owners and persuade them to be your
affiliates. You should do this continually.

6. They don't differentiate their ebook from its
competitors.

When you choose your topic, even if there are a hundred
other ebooks out there on same general subject, choose an
angle for yours that will make it easy for yours to be
distinguished from the others.

For example, right now job-hunting ebooks are very popular.
There are dozens that are big sellers. "Secrets of Breaking
Into Pharmaceutical Sales" has a very specific title that
sets it apart from the competition, and is aimed at a
clearly identified target audience. Incidentally, it's
selling very well itself.

7. They write ebooks that nobody will pay for.

Many ebook authors write about information that either
people can get for free, or that people are not actually
interested in enough to pay for the information.

Before you invest weeks or months into the writing of your
ebook, invest a little time investigating whether other
ebooks in the same subject area are selling on the Web.

So, there you have it - the seven big mistakes to avoid.
Remember, the opportunities are plentiful - and huge - right
now for anyone who wants to become a best-selling ebook
author. Simply use common sense, follow our advice, and let
your literary career flourish!
