Jim Edwards here with an article (below) I think you'll
really enjoy...

In fact, you're getting the "scoop" on all my newspaper
readers because this article doesn't even get published
officially until tomorrow's paper!

It's about 3 *very* cool websites with tools I use in *my*
business.

You can try all of them out for fr^e... and you'll find
they help you protect your intellectual property, access
information you need faster, and keep you updated online.

Also, if you like the article, feel free to post it on your
website, share it with your subscribers, post it on your
blog, or add it to your autoresponder.
(See simple reprint instructions below.)

To your success,

Jim

PS - Have you ever wondered what it *really* takes to get a
money-making mini-site posted up on the web (without being
a computer geek, buying expensive software, or paying
outrageous fees to a webmaster)?

If the answer is "YES", then take a couple of minutes to
check out this website right now...

Often I find websites that offer interesting, innovative,
or just plain cool stuff that doesn't quite rate a stand-
alone article, but several of them together will get you
jumping all over your computer to check them out.

** Copyright Thieves Beware **

A free service at www.copyscape.com allows you to see if
anyone out on the Web has copied the text from your website
and to what degree.

Just enter the url of your webpage, article, or blog post,
hit the submit button and the site will show you if another
website contains substantially the same text as your page.

If you get a hit, then click the links provided to go to
the sites that may have copied you and see highlighted text
that matches your site.

The free service on the home page only displays 10 results,
and if you want to see more, you can pay $10-20 a month and
the service will monitor your web pages and let you know of
everyone who copies them.

A positive use for this tool I thought of for anyone who
operates an online business: put in your competitors' url
where they display the ads, articles, and other tools they
give their affiliates, and see who links to them.

They may have active affiliates posting their content (with
permission of course) and you may find some great potential
partners to help you promote your business.

Another way you can watch for this type of activity is by
signing up for alerts at Google.

Go to <a href="http://www.google.com/alerts">http://www.google.com/alerts</a> and enter in your name,
product title, article title, or some specific keyword
combination that would tip you off that someone had taken
your stuff (or was posting your competitors' material).

You can then receive an update with links any time Google
finds a new reference to your keyword phrase.

** Surf While You Sleep **

One of the disadvantages of surfing the web, especially
with a 56K modem, involves the fact that your browser
doesn't allow you to easily and selectively download
content from the World Wide Web.

For anyone who ever experiences this frustration, here
comes GetBot to the rescue!

Available at www.getbot.com, this handy little program
allows you to surf individual sites, view all the page
titles, see all the website links, both internal and
external, and decide which pictures and pages you want
before downloading.

Should you desire to download an entire site, you can set
the program to run before going to bed. When you wake up
the next morning all the information will already reside on
your computer, making for a fast and pleasant perusal of
all the material.

Getbot comes as shareware with limited functionality, which
means you can try the program for free, but if you decide
to keep it, or want all the features, then you must pay $19.

On the bad side, it's a memory hog, so be prepared for a
restart or two when using it.

<-- SIDE NOTE *not* in newspaper column -->

GetBot is a decent starter program... but if you want
real power for downloading websites to view offline,
check out www.httrack.com I've found it to be MUCH
more versatile... and, it's 100% no cost :-)

<-- END SIDE NOTE *not* in newspaper column -->

** Keyword Specific News **

Log on to <a href="http://News.Google.com">http://News.Google.com</a> and you can find just
about any breaking news story on virtually any topic.

Though the front page is segmented into main categories
like Science, World News, Technology, and more, Google News
also allows you to search over 4,500 different news sources
for stories containing your keywords.

For example, a search for "Iraqi Elections" returned over
10,000 stories, many of them less than 5 or 6 hours old
when I did the search.

Google News also allows you to sign up for "News Alerts"
via email where the service will email you a link every
time a new story with your search criteria appears in their
database.

If you need keyword-specific information and articles to
post in your blog... this makes an excellent way to get
material sent to you the minute the news breaks.

Interesting events and news items occur every day around the web, and in this article I thought I’d share some clips and snippets I think you’ll find interesting.

<strong>Google Offers Free Picture Editor</strong>
I had no clue that Google offers a free picture editor software to help you make your own screen savers, cd’s, screen “wallpaper” and more. Log on to <a href="http://www.picasa.com/">www.Picasa.com</a> and download the latest upgraded version for free. This PC software allows you to perform a variety of editing functions, including remove “red eye,” make slide shows, and upload pictures to your blog on blogger.com (another Google property) with the click of a button. It even makes it easy to send your pictures through Gmail (Google’s free email service) by resizing your pictures for dial-up users and attaching them to your email messages. Overall, the Picasa software rates a look if you want to organize and spruce up your digital pictures without investing any money.

<strong>Domain Hijacking a Reality</strong>
This past Novemeber, Icann, the ruling body for Internet domain names, changed the rules for transferring domains from one registrar to another. This came in response to complaints by domain owners that many registrars made it too difficult for them to take their business to a different registrar. By making it easier to move a domain however, Icann may have inadvertently made it easier for domains to get hijacked by unscrupulous people.

This past weekend, New York City’s oldest Internet Service Provider (ISP), Panix.com, had their domain name snatched and transferred to another company in Australia. After a couple of tense days, the domain got transferred back, but this exposed vulnerabilities in the domain management system that can affect even the “big” guys. If you own even one domain name, make sure you use the “locking” feature offered by most registrars to prevent unauthorized changes to your domain. Also, keep an eye out for and read all emails from your registrar regarding the status of your domain name.

<strong>Tsunami Relief Scam</strong>
In the wake of one of the most terrible tragedies in history, it seems online con-men without a conscience want to exploit the good nature of people all over the world who desire to help the victims. The FBI just charged a Pennsylvania man with sending almost 1 million spam messages where he posed as a representative of Mercy Corps soliciting donations. The man instructed donors to send him money via a PayPal account established for the purpose of collecting bogus donations.

If you feel the need, as many do, to help with the relief effort (or any worthwhile charitable cause) by donating money, make sure your funds actually go to the right place instead of lining the pockets of a cyber-conman. The easiest way to do this is simply to open your web browser, type in the web address yourself (don’t click the link in a spam email message), and make a donation directly on the website of the organization. A low-tech alternative to online giving: pick up the phone and call the agency you want to donate to, or get in your car, drive to their office, and make the donation in person.

When you spend 6-10 hours a day on the Internet like I do, you can sometimes forget that the tools and resources you use everyday (and take for granted) might rate an incredibly helpful discovery to people who don't already know they exist. Whether they help you save time, find what you need, or save a lot of money, these tools and services rate my highest recommendation for just plain making life easier, faster, and cheaper.

Short Keys - Available for free trial at www.shortkeys.com/lite.htm, Short Keys allows you to create shortcut keys to cut down on repetitive typing tasks. You can pre-program it quickly and easily to type in huge chunks of text. I use it primarily to quickly respond to questions I receive repeatedly each day because it allows me to respond personally, but also saves hours of time typing the same answers over and over.

Spyware Detection & Removal - Spyware ranks a close second behind viruses as the top threat to your security online. Viruses can destroy your computer, but spyware can destroy your life! Though many programs exist to detect and combat spyware, I personally prefer "Spy Sweeper" from WebRoot.com.

Mail Washer - Available for free trial at www.mailwasher.net, this program enables you to spot and delete spam and viruses before downloading them to your computer. I couldn't survive without this program and it rates the best $30 investment you can make to combat spam!

PayPal - If you want to send or receive money online (personal or business), PayPal.com gets my highest recommendation. PayPal experienced service issues a few years ago, but since online auction giant eBay purchased them, PayPal is extremely professional and well managed.

GoDaddy.com - Cheap, reliable, easy to use domain name registrar that only charges $8.95 per year for each domain name you register. Also, enhanced security against domain "hijacking" means I purchase all my domains through GoDaddy.

Elance.com - With an entire world of professional help available online, even the smallest business can afford to hire out for just about any type of help you can imagine. An online auction style site, Elance.com allows service providers to bid on your job and you select them based on price, experience, and feedback on previous jobs.

Google -Google.com still rates as the Web's best search engine. When I need to find something online, Google usually produces exactly what I need to locate!

Front Page - Say what you want about Microsoft, but the FrontPage html editor has served me well for the last 7 years (and counting). Though I don't use the more advanced features, I can always count on FrontPage to help me get web pages done quickly.

Smart FTP - Log on to www.smartftp.com and download a free copy of the easiest FTP program I've ever used. If you need to transfer files to and from a web server and you know how to use Windows Explorer, Smart FTP will enable you to upload files to the web like a pro in minutes.

Note Tab Light - Perhaps my favorite tool of all. Note Tab enables me to easily format text messages for my newsletters, manipulate html code and remove formatting from word processing documents. Log on to www.notetab.com for a free copy of the "light" version.

Jim Edwards Update Jan 2005

Jim Edwards here with a couple of VERY important
announcements (and an article to help you deal
with the "information overload" that's sure to
hit you this month)!

It's a fact...

What you do this month (Jan 2005) will set the stage for
your success the entire year!

Right now, this minute, you're setting the tone for what
kind of year you'll have... because what you *think* about
NOW dictates your actions the next 12 months of 2005.

To help you kick-start 2005 the right way, I've arranged
two very eye-opening and up-to-the-minute events *this
week* so YOU can get what you want this year!

** Event #1 - The Google Gold Rush is Back On!
(January 11, 2005)

This past week Google announced a *MAJOR change* to their
AdWords advertising program... a change that will
profoundly affect ANYONE selling through affiliate
programs.

** This change applies to both affiliates AND affiliate
managers / product owners.

This change will revolutionize the way affiliates (and
affiliate managers) will use Google AdWords in 2005... and
the quicker you adapt the more profits you can grab!

I've arranged for world-famous Google AdWords expert Perry
Marshall and myself to get on the phone for a special
1-hour teleconference on Tuesday 1/11/05 to lay out exactly
WHAT these AdWords changes mean to you AND what you should
do NOW to position yourself for ongoing earnings! :-)

Go here to sign up for the fr^ee call now (limited seating)

=> http://www.ebookfire.com/Google-AdWords-Call.html

But that's just the first half...

Regardless of whether you sell as an affiliate... publish a
blog... sell your own product... publish articles to drive
traffic... operate a membership site... or whatever you do
to make money online...

One of the most valuable things you can possess is the
knowledge of how to write excellent, profit-pulling sales
copy.

This one skill alone has impacted my own personal financial
bottom line more than ANY other skill you can name.

In a nutshell, if you know how to write great copy, you can
make *good* money on the Internet!

This fact leads us to event #2 this week...

** Event #2 - Yanik Silver's Ultimate Internet Copywriting
Secrets Call (January 13, 2005)

Yanik Silver is a friend of mine... he's also one of the
BEST copywriters in the world!

Now that's a tall statement, but Yanik knows how to put
words on paper (and on the Web) that get people to spend
money on valuable products and services.

How do I know he's this good?

Because I can personally attribute hundreds of thousands of
my own business's sales and income to Yanik's help and
advice on writing effective sales copy... yes, he's that
good and his information and coaching have helped me
directly!

So, to help YOU start writing better copy, I called in a
favor from Yanik and convinced him to do a teleconference
with me to teach you some insider secrets on quickly
creating kick-butt copy!

On this special call you'll discover:

~ 3 of the 13 most powerful psychological hot "buttons" for
making people order now and not think it over...

~ 2 of the 7 best ways to create urgency and compel people
  to act now...

~ 1 of the 4 best ways to deal with price so it's not even
  an issue...

~ 2 of the 9 best "PROOF" elements you can use so ultra
skeptical visitors trust you and much, much more!

Plus, Yanik will reveal the little-known copywriting
technique he used to put $43,668.73 into his pocket in 24
hours.

Go here to sign up for the call now (seating for this call
is also limited):

=> http://www.ebookfire.com/-Yanik-Copy-Secrets.html

One more thing before we get to today's article...

Here's a question I frequently get asked by subscribers
about tele-conferences: "Why should I get on the call when
you'll be publishing it as an MP3 and I can listen to over
the Web later?"

In other words, why should I schedule the time, jump on the
phone, and pay long distance charges when I can probably
download it later?

This is a very legitimate question... with a very simple
answer.

If the topic of a tele-seminar (ANY tele-seminar) interests
you, you should schedule the time and get on the call for 4
excellent reasons:

1. It gives you a time -- an appointment -- to sit down, get
rid of distractions, and make an investment in yourself
by listening to the call and absorbing the information...

2. As far as I know, you never get an opportunity to ask an
MP3 file questions (and there are no guarantees that the
conference recording won't encounter a tech problem and
   get lost forever)...

3. By jumping on the call live, you get the information
BEFORE anyone else does (which can give you a significant
   advantage over your competitors)...

4. Often, time-sensitive, special BONUS offers are made on
these calls that are NOT available to those who listen to
   the MP3 a week later...

So, bottom line, if you want the information someone is
making available on a conference call, take the time to sit
down and get on the call... you'll get a lot more benefit
from a "live" event than you will from a recording.

Finally, before we get to the article (which, by the way,
teaches you a couple of great techniques for dealing with
information overload), I have something I need to get off my
chest...

I'm feeling very upset about the whole tsunami tragedy and
all the devastation and problems I'm seeing on the
television (I can't bear to watch most of it).

This truly is a disaster beyond measure.

Originally I said that I would give half (1/2) the profit
from sales of my "5 Steps To Getting Anything You Want" in
January to go directly to the relief effort, but I've
changed my mind...

I've decided I'm going to give ALL the profit to the relief
effort.

That's right!

I am going to give *ALL* (not some... not part... not
half... but ALL) the profit from sales of that product in
Jan 2005 to the relief effort.

So, if you've been on the fence about ordering a copy of
my program, now's a great time to act.

=> http://www.HowToGetAnythingYouWant.com

I'll keep you posted on how that ends up.

So with no further ado, here's this week's article, which
by the way, if you like it, feel free to share it with your
own list, post it on your site, or add it to your
autoresponder.

See the end of the article for reprint details.

To your success!

It's been said that the typical Sunday edition of the
New York Times newspaper contains more information than the
average person in 15th century England was exposed to
during their entire lifetime.

In the information age, our minds get bombarded daily with
so much data that we start filtering it out as a self-
defense mechanism.

On the Internet, the information overload gets so severe
that it seems to bring out the ADD (Attention Deficit
Disorder) in all of us.

To make things worse, expect the avalanche of information
we must all deal with online to start coming faster and
harder this year and to never, ever stop.

Unlimited amounts of information available online
represents a truly double-edged mental sword for all of us.

On the good side, you can find out virtually anything you
want about any person, place, thing, fact, problem and
more.

On the bad side, since you can find anything, many people
get caught up and lost in "everything"... which means they
never accomplish much.

In fact, most people end up drowning in the sea of
information when all they wanted was a simple drink of
water.

To help you effectively deal with the never-ending torrent
of online information, let me offer 3 simple solutions that
will profoundly affect your ability to get things done this
year.

First, operate with a clear purpose for what you plan to
accomplish online.

Many people start out with a vague idea of what they want
to accomplish on the Web and end up wasting hours surfing
aimlessly.

One simple solution: write down your purpose for going
online on a sticky note and put it on the side of your
monitor.

Simple purpose statements like "Check email" or "Find map
to Detroit" or "Research where to advertise my blog" can
save countless hours by reminding you of your true purpose
for sitting down at the keyboard (and keep you from
wandering off to explore Britney Spears or The Simpsons).

Next, if you do want to go off on a sidetrack away from
your original purpose, set a time limit.

Kind of like recess in kindergarten, give yourself a set
amount of time to run free, but then get back in the
classroom and get back to business at the appointed time.

Typically, I give myself anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to
roam, but only if I think it will bear fruit for my purpose
in the end.

I also force myself to honestly answer the question,
"Does this really fit with my purpose for being online
right now?"

If not, then I goof off for about 5 minutes and then write
down the idea, website, or topic that distracted me and
leave it for future investigation.

By the way, a simple egg timer also works great for this.

Finally, if you ever find yourself online without a
purpose, but can't seem to stop surfing, searching, or
clicking the "send/receive" button on email, simply get up
from your computer and walk away for a few minutes to clear
your head.

Often this represents the fastest way to stop yourself
wasting countless hours in meaningless activity online.

Bottom line, implementing these simple strategies for
dealing with information overload online now will pay huge
dividends in peace of mind and time savings in the future.

7 Years At The Keyboard

      - by Jim Edwards

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Ok, for those of you still waiting, the Internet won't go
away.

Hang up the hopes that it represents a passing fad sharing
the fate of the Beanie or the Pet Rock.

With legitimate high-tech stocks finally in the market,
regular people doing "real" business online, and consumer
acceptance to the point of purchasing movie tickets and
homeowners insurance over the Internet, the Web is here to
stay.

However, many people still get that glassy-eyed, far away
dreamer look on their faces when they think of the riches
awaiting them on just the other side of their own dot-com.

Well, whether your business represents a laptop on a TV tray
in the basement, or a mega-corporation with offices all over
the world, my last 7 years in the Wild West online has
revealed a few "truths" which should last from here until
the end of computers.

** There is no get-rich-quick! **

I guess it's in man's nature to desire instant wealth.

Since the dawn of history, people threw common sense to the
wind and went off in search of "buried treasure."
Unfortunately, instead of discovering riches, most just
ended up buried under a load of debt, misery and despair
themselves.

In the late 1990's we saw the modern day equivalent of a
gold rush with high-tech stocks, dot-com companies, and
investors who decided not to use common sense.

Well, we all know the result... many people lost a lot of
money and the first online "gold rush" was over. :-)

** The "Secret" to online business success! **

Would you like to know the real secret to making money
online that will govern the Internet for all eternity?

Here you go: Spend LESS than you MAKE.

That's right!

Simple math creates millionaires on the Internet!

Regardless of the market, size of your enterprise, or the
nature of the product or service you sell, the people who
make money online spend less than they make in revenue.

The people and companies that make money are the ones who
let someone with basic math skills monitor the advertising
department!

** People don't buy refrigerators online! **

That's right, most people don't buy refrigerators online,
but to look at the way some companies operate, you'd swear
they did.

Here's how people use the Web to buy a refrigerator (or any
other major purchase): they go online, research different
models and prices, look for a local store, go to the store,
and buy one.

Companies that use the web to make money (instead of wasting
it by the bucket-load) understand the difference between
closing the sale online and providing information that leads
to making the sale at a physical location.

If you don't know it by now, the Web is a direct response
advertising medium.

What this means is, if you're trying to do business online,
there are really only 3 things you can do:

1. Make the sale (they pay on the site)
2. Get a lead (usually an optin for newsletter, mini-course)
3. Make money on a click (referring through Google Ad Sense)

Knowing what your audience will and will not do online is
critical so you know which of the 3 (or combination) is best
for your site's maximum profit.

** The quick and the dead! **

People who buy online have little or no patience.

They go online to get information NOW, or to place an order
NOW, or to get their questions answered NOW!

The online world is a "right NOW" world, where wait times
get measured in seconds and people get mighty testy if their
needs don't get met almost instantly.

Speed, not size, determines the victor in e-commerce because
the businesses that meet people's immediate expectations as
quickly as possible (if not faster) ultimately win.

That's great news for the "little" guy, or the individual
entrepreneur who has an idea and can act on it quickly.

Often, the real opportunities online appear so quickly that
a decision must be made and acted on in a matter of hours.

While larger companies are trying to arrange a meeting to
discuss what might be done, small, fast operations have
already tested their theories and started to slurp up the
customers!

** "Change" - The only thing that stays the same! **

How we did it last year isn't necessarily how we'll do it
next year.

The online world moves so fast that techniques and
strategies for doing something can appear one day, get
adopted as "the way we do things" and then disappear or get
rendered useless in 6 months or less.

Perfect example: pop-ups and pop-up blockers.

Pop-up's used to be the #1 way to get subscribers... but now
pop-up blockers have rendered them virtually useless.

No if's, and's, or but's -- Pop-up's are DEAD now that
Microsoft has them in their sites as a security problem!
(You heard it here first)

By the way, the catalyst for change can come from anywhere.

A casual comment... a bit of information from one place,
combined with another... a hunch... a "feeling"... all of
these combine to create opportunities, while also closing
doors to "how we used to do it."

Accept change. Learn to adapt to change. Embrace change as
a fact of life and business online and see it as opportunity
opening up before you.

To do otherwise is suicide.

** It's Never Too Late To Start **

Many people never start anything because they think the bus
has left them standing at the station.

They think it's too late for them to jump in the game... any
game... and all the good opportunities have already been
snatched up by somebody else.

All the good domain names are gone... (wrong!)

All the best businesses have already been started... (nope!)

Traffic is too expensive... (uh-uh!)

It's too complicated... (negative!)

I don't have the right skills... (hire someone cheap!)

If only I knew how to do this or that... (so learn!)

If only I knew so-and-so... (introduce yourself!)

I don't have a list of subscribers... (build one!)

All of these are lame excuses that actually have no basis
in reality.

If you want to get in the game online... just do it!

If you want to start an online business... just do it!

If you want to start a newsletter... just do it!

*** Here's a real "secret," something I learned about 14
years ago when I was a "green" loan officer at my first
mortgage bank:

"The more things change and the faster they change, the
easier it is to get into the game even if thousands have
gotten in before you."

Why?

Because when something changes, EVERYONE goes back to square
one and has to learn how to deal with the new information
that impacts the marketplace.

All you have to do is get in the game, things will change,
and you'll be right up there even with everyone else.

Since things change so fast, the Internet actually makes it
easier to start late, catch up fast, and even PASS the "old
hands" and established players by adapting to change faster
than they do.

The biggest mistake most people make is simply not believing
in themselves enough to start... and if you never start, you
can never cross the finish line.

But, just by starting.... you are on your way to winning!

If only I knew so-and-so... (introduce yourself!)

All of these are lame excuses that actually have no basis

'MyDoom' Virus Potentially Threatens Google IPO
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; - by Jim Edwards
(c) Jim Edwards - All Rights reserved
=====================================
The latest in a series of viruses hitting the Internet thissummer, MyDoom.O, attacked Google's website on Monday, potentially interfering with Google's upcoming IPO (initialpublic offering).

Visitors to the Internet search giant (along with Yahoo,AltaVista, and Lycos) on Monday found themselves staring ateither a blank screen or a screen showing no search results.

With Google's upcoming multi-billion dollar IPO, potentiallythe richest Internet offering ever, a shut down of this typecan put investor confidence into a tailspin.

Google reportedly doubled its net income over this sameperiod last year, in large part to its innovative AdSenseprogram that pays website owners commissions on Google adsdisplayed on their websites.

However, since Google reportedly generates 97% of itsrevenue from advertising, any loss of service for asignificant length of time (even a few hours) potentiallycosts the company millions of dollars in lost revenue.

Such vulnerability to attack could also cause many investorsto think twice about paying over $100 a share when Googlegoes public.

MyDoom.O actually represents a reincarnation of sorts of theMyDoom.A (a.k.a. Novarg) that terrorized the Web earlierthis year with denial of service attacks.

The virus comes as an attachment to an email message withfile extensions of.bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif, .scr, or .zip.

Once the virus infects the host computer, it opens up a portthat allows an attacker to access the computer and use itfor a variety of purposes.

One, they can access the network to which the computer isattached.

Two, they can use the computer as a relay station forsending thousands of spam messages or to spread the virus.

Three, the attacker can install all sorts of nifty softwareon your computer, such as keystroke loggers that will recordand transmit things like your credit card numbers, passwords, social security number and any other informationyou type into your keyboard.

In Google's case, the virus takes on a whole differentmenace.

You see, an infected computer, along with thousands ofothers, can serve as a means to launch a coordinated attackto shut down a specific website, such as Google, by floodingit with millions of bogus page requests.

This additional traffic either slows or completelyinterrupts the flow of legitimate traffic.
If people can't view the site under attack, they can't clickon ads, Google doesn't make money, and that's not, in theimmortal words of a recent celebrity in the news, 'a goodthing.'

Since this virus carries with it multiple threats, it servesyet again as a reminder to practice safe computingtechniques.

Since the virus often comes masquerading as an attachmentfrom a trusted source, do not open any email attachmentsunless you know the source and expect to get an attachmentfrom them.
Keep your anti-virus and firewall up to date.

Since this virus is actually well-known, unless you don'tcarry any virus protection at all, your software shouldprotect you against infection if you simply update yourvirus definitions.

Does Microsoft Show Hackers How To Attack?
      - by Jim Edwards

    The Net Reporter Ezine
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

After another security hole recently surfaced in Microsoft's
Windows operating system, the software giant released a
patch this past Friday to plug the possibly devastating
"back door" which allows hackers to potentially seize
control of any pc running Windows.

The latest threat, "Download.Ject," infiltrates computers
after users surfing with Microsoft's "Internet Explorer" web
browser visit websites infected with the virus.

This newest security patch covers Windows XP, 2000, and
Windows Server 2003.

Several factors make this latest development more disturbing
than past discoveries of security problems with Internet
Explorer, currently the most dominant web browser on the
market.

First, it demonstrates very clearly that criminals
discovered they can use the power of viruses to very
profitably steal important bank, personal, and credit data
from people on a large scale.

Second, it took Microsoft what many would consider a very
long time to come up with a patch for this problem.

Before a fix appeared, Microsoft told everyone who uses
Internet Explorer to stick their finger in the dyke by
putting their web browser security settings on high,
rendering it impossible to view or use features on many
websites and web-based services.

Third, expect this to happen again as new holes open in the
future when Microsoft makes Windows more complicated, adds
layers of code, and generally makes the operating system
more complex.

This may sound like business as usual, however, I think
this story actually points to a much deeper problem, one for
which I'm not sure a simple solution exists.

Though free and reasonably reliable, many people do not
automatically update their Windows operating system through
the update service on Microsoft's website. (I won't even get
into how many people don't operate up-to-date anti-virus
protection.)

Whenever Microsoft publishes a security update, especially
for a highly publicized and obviously widespread security
breach, thousands of people will not immediately download
the update.

In fact, tens-of-thousands of users will not download these
security updates for days, weeks, even months (if ever).

So let me ask what seems like a very elementary question: By
publishing security updates that point out very obvious
flaws in their system, doesn't Microsoft also point the way
to exactly where the holes exist?

Let me put it another way.

Doesn't this rate the same as discovering that the local
bank vault won't lock and then announcing the details on the
front page of the paper along with the dates and times no
bank guard will be on duty?

After all, if tens-of-thousands of users won't immediately
get the Microsoft Security Patch, don't those patches show
hackers exactly which holes get plugged (and which,
logically, must already be open without the patch)?

It doesn't take a hacker with more than a basic set of
skills to recognize where and what holes got fixed and then
reverse-engineer how they can get into computers that don't
get updated.

Now, do I have a concrete, 100% bullet-proof answer to this
problem? Unfortunately, I don't have more than a common-
sense answer...

At this point, your best defense rates staying current on
the latest threats and how to defend against them.

Keep your anti-virus software current, your firewall up, and
your Windows software updated with the latest security
patches.

Though not a perfect solution, at least you'll have a
fighting chance to prevent, or at least minimize, any
possible threats.

Let The Email Wars Begin

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Things just got a lot hotter in the hyper-competitive world
of online email providers.

In response to Google's announcement that their soon-to-be-
launched "Gmail" service will offer users 1 gigabyte of
email storage, Yahoo! announced an upgrade of their free
email service to allow users 100MB of free email storage
along with other enhancements.

Microsoft's Hotmail will surely also announce a free
upgrade in email storage space.

On the surface it might just appear like a simple case of
one-upmanship, but it actually represents major forces
digging in online and preparing to do battle.

It appears Yahoo! simply wanted to take the issue of email
storage space off the table as a consideration for users as
to which email service to choose.

Google enjoyed considerable media and public attention over
the past few weeks with the media marveling at how Google
intended to give hundreds of megabytes more space to its
users than Yahoo! or Hotmail.

With this move, Yahoo! made storage a "non-issue," but the
real war has only just begun.

Email ranks as the number one most popular online activity
according to virtually any survey you care to read.

When people go online, they spend the single biggest chunk
of their time sending, receiving, and reading email.

Online email providers understand that eyeballs on a page
looking at advertising and responding to offers is what
makes them money.

By increasing loyalty among email users in order to
repeatedly draw them back to the same website (often
several times a day), email service providers like Yahoo!,
Hotmail and Google can keep people looking at revenue
generating ads.

Despite the best efforts of government regulators, private
organizations, software filters, ISP's and others, over
half of all email sent online rates as unsolicited
commercial email (SPAM).

Besides storage space, Google, Yahoo! and Hotmail will
start claiming that their spam filters rate better than the
rest.

These online powerhouses hope to attract users with the
promise of cutting down and even eliminating the avalanche
of get-rich-quick, pornography, and ink-jet cartridge
offers (among others) that bombard virtually anyone with an
email account more than 15 minutes old.

This will, however, lead to another problem that many of
them won't talk about, which involves filtering legitimate
email as spam.

Unfortunately, the sword cuts both ways on this issue.

So where does it all end? Never! Hotmail will enter the
fray with expanded storage capacity as well as the promise
of less spam and a more "friendly" interface to make your
email life even easier.

Yahoo! and Hotmail will most likely copy Google and start
serving context sensitive advertising based on the content
of each email message as it get viewed.

Privacy advocates will weigh in to claim that all of the
filtering and serving of ads based on an email message's
content violates our rights to privacy and heralds the
arrival of "Big Brother."

But all this jockeying for position and enticing users from
one email service to another actually represents a great
boon for the average Internet user.

It will force three of the Web's biggest players to wake up
and improve their services after 2 or 3 years of "business
as usual" and we can all expect a few valuable innovations
to result.

Cyber Crooks Go "Phishing"

      - by Jim Edwards

© Jim Edwards - All Rights reserved
    http://www.thenetreporter.com
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

"Phishing," the latest craze among online evil-doers, has
nothing to do with sitting at the end of a dock on a sunny
afternoon dangling a worm to entice hungry catfish.

But, if you take their bait, this new breed of online con
artist will hook you, reel you in, and take you for every
dollar you have... or worse.

"Phishing" describes a combination of techniques used by
cyber crooks to bait people into giving up sensitive
personal data such as credit card numbers, social security
numbers, bank account numbers, dates of birth and more.

Their techniques work so well that, according to
FraudWatchInternational.com, "phishing" rates as the
fastest growing scam on the Internet.

Here's the basic pattern for a "phishing" scam...

You receive a very official email that appears to originate
from a legitimate source, such as a bank, eBay, PayPal,
a major retailer, or some other well known entity.

In the email it tells you that something bad is about to
happen unless you act quickly.

Typically it tells you that your account is about to get
closed, that someone appears to have stolen your identity,
or even that someone opened a fraudulent account using your
name.

In order to help straighten everything out, you need to
click a link in the email and provide some basic account
information so they can verify your identity and then give
you additional details so you can help get everything
cleared up.

Once you give up your information... it's all over but the
crying!

After getting your information, these cyber-bandits can
empty your bank accounts, deplete your PayPal accounts, run
up your credit card balances, open new credit accounts,
assume your identity and much worse.

An especially disturbing new variation of this scam
specifically targets online business owners and affiliate
marketers.

In this con, the scammer's email informs you that they've
just sent $1,219.43 (or a similar big but believable
amount) in affiliate commissions to you via PayPal.

They need you to log into your PayPal account to verify
receipt of the money and then email them back to confirm
you got it.

Since you're so excited at the possibility of an unexpected
pay day, you click the link to go to PayPal, log in, and
BANG! They have your PayPal login information and can empty
your account.

This new "phishing" style scam works extremely well for 2
basic reasons.

First, by exploiting your sense of urgency created by fear
or greed, crooks get you to click the link and give them
your information without thinking.

Second, the scammers use a variety of cloaking and spoofing
techniques to make their emails and websites appear totally
legitimate, making it extremely hard to spot a fake website,
especially when they've first whipped you into an emotional
frenzy.

The good news, however, is that you can protect yourself
relatively easily against this type of cyber-crime with
basic software and common sense.

Most of these scams get delivered to you via Spam
(unsolicited email), so a good spam blocker will cut down
on many of them even making it to your inbox.

If you receive an email that looks legitimate and you want
to respond, Stop - Wait - Think!

Verify all phone numbers with a physical phone book or
online phone directory like www.Verizon.com or
www.ATT.com/directory/ before calling.

Look for spelling and grammatical errors that make it look
like someone who doesn't speak English or your native
language very well wrote it.

Never click the link provided in the email, but go directly
to the website by typing in the main address of the site
yourself (example: www.paypal.com or www.ebay.com).

Forward the email to the main email address of the website
(example: support@paypal.com) or call the customer service
number on the main website you typed in yourself and ask if
it is in fact legitimate.

Above all remember this:

Your bank, credit card company, PayPal, eBay and anyone
else you deal with online already knows your account
number, username, password or any other account specific
information.

They don't need to email you for ANY reason to ask you to
confirm your information -- so NEVER respond to email
requests for your account or personal details.

Is Multi-Media Hype... or Real?

Here's my response to someone who recently asked if multi-media products were hype or real.

Multi-media has been around and is here to stay... despite
the fact that you're seeing (and will continue to see) a
whole lot of people who know nothing about it jump on the
bandwagon and start flogging it as the next greatest thing.

A multi-media product is anything that's not plain text
like an ebook.

It can be a newsletter, like my
http://www.IGottaTellYou.com

It can be an irreverent RANT on just about any topic
http://www.FridayNightSmackdown.com

It can be a simple combination of a PDF with MP3
http://www.MortgageLoanTips.com

It can be a HUGE collection of DVD's, Screen Capture
Video, Print, and more
http://www.TheUltimateTrafficMachine.com

or it can just be a couple of CD's on a specific topic
http://www.HowToGetAnythingYouWant.com

But multi-media is not the niche, it's a way to provide
more value faster... and in a way that can be absorbed
more quickly... to ANY niche.

The amazing thing (like anything) is that multi-media
will fall out of favor... I'm not kidding. It's the hot
topic right now, but the crowd will move on to something
else here in the next few months.

All the hype will die down, the knock-off artists will move
on to other areas... and it's back to business as usual.

The serious product creators are adopting multi-media as part of their arsenals... and it's not just making a few
Camtasia Videos and calling it a "product."

Like anything, it's a tool, it's not and end in and of
itself... learn the use the tools correctly, and you'll
smoke the competition. :-)

Let me ask you a question:

Let's just say that if you operate (or plan to operate) your
own opt-in email list, it's absolutely critical that you
read every word of this article right now... especially if
you want your emails to actually get through to the
millions of HotMail (and other) users on the Web.

Oh, if you like the article and it's a fit for your list,
please feel free to share it with your newsletter, ezine,
or post it on your site. Just check out the reprint
instructions at the end.

Is the "IronPort" Whitelist Actually An
Extortion Tactic Targeting Small, But Legitimate
Email Marketers?

It appears that Mr. Gates' prophetic prediction that
charging marketers to send email across the Microsoft email
networks (MSN and Hotmail) to cut down on Sp*m is about to
come true.

According to CIO Today, Microsoft is now employing
"IronPort Anti-Spam Technology."

"IronPort" is a paid "white-list" for people who send "mass
email" (including newsletter publishers, ezine publishers,
affiliate managers, mini-course operators, and basically
anyone who has a list of opt-in emails).

If you send any type of email where you do a broadcast to
everyone on your list, this applies to you.

If you want your email broadcasts to get through their
filters, you must pay a hefty fee and post a "bond."

Here are some facts about this developing story:

1. They charge by how much email you send a month, but the
minimum charge is a:
$375 Application Fee, plus
$500 Annual License Fee, plus
$500 "Bond" fee.
That's $1,375.00 just to get in the game.

If you want to see the complete breakdown, go here
<a href="https://www.bondedsender.com/fees.jsp">https://www.bondedsender.com/fees.jsp</a>

2. If you go over the "complaint" threshold of 1 complaint
per month, then they will debit $20 from your bond fee for
each complaint to "fine" you for being naughty.

Now that sounds good on the surface, but here's a scenario
to try on for size:

Your competitor / enemy / Net "psycho" signs up for 50 fr~e
email accounts at HotMail and complains about you every
month when you send your newsletter.

49 complaints (50 - 1 allowed complaint) times $20 a
complaint comes out to $980 in fines.

Now, can you dispute the fines? Sure, absolutely!

But how much will you lose in time, energy and effort
disputing the allegations? (My guess is, a whole lot more
than that.)

You can check out all the "rules" here
<a href="https://www.bondedsender.com/fees.jsp ">https://www.bondedsender.com/fees.jsp </a>
Here are the details of the program straight from the
horse's mouth...
<a href="https://www.bondedsender.com ">https://www.bondedsender.com </a>

Here's my take on this whole thing (which dropped on me out
of the blue today):

First, don't get me wrong... I hate sp~m with a passion!

I spend at least an hour a day fighting it (down from 3
hours a day just a few weeks ago before I shut down about
2 dozen email addresses that got harvested by spambots over
the last few years).

With that said, this whole "IronPort" thing sounds and
smells to me like "white list" extortion.

Why?

Here's the basic premise: "Pay to get your email through our
filters, or else you run the very likely risk of not
getting your email through at all."

In fact, here's a *direct quote* from their website
<a href="https://www.bondedsender.com/faqs/sender.jsp">https://www.bondedsender.com/faqs/sender.jsp</a>

<-- Start Quote -->

"What happens if I don't bond my email?
You're rolling the dice and taking your chances with spam
filters, black lists and bulk folders. Some days all of
your email may be delivered; other days 30-50% could be
blocked."

<-- End Quote -->

Kind of reminds you of a cheesy mafia movie on late night
TV:

Me:
"Hey Bugsy, what happens if I don't pay my 'protection'
money this month? What if I stand up to you and refuse to
pay?"

Bugsy:
"Well, maybe nothin' will happen to you because the
Boss ain't payin' attention when I tell him you decided not
to pay. On the other hand, maybe I'll just smack you around
a little bit... or maybe-- I'll BREAK YOUR LEG with this
baseball bat! Go ahead and not pay us... then we'll see
what happens!"

Now, back to my question: "Why should I have to pay a huge
fee to send email to people who have opted in to my lists?"

The argument from Microsoft (and soon to be other ISP's) is
that the uncontrolled sp~m on the web is costing them a lot
of money to deliver email nobody wants to read.

Well, if that's the case, aren't email users shelling out
cash or credit to pay their ISPs for email services (mine
charges me $40 a month for cable), or paying for free
services like HotMail or Yahoo Mail through viewing
advertising on every page?

I was under the impression we were already paying to
receive email... and last time I checked, there was no
place to put a stamp!

Okay, even if we make it past that and we accept the
argument that legitimate emailers should have to pay a fee
in order to get on that big "whitelist in the sky"
somewhere... there are still two very important
considerations here:

1. First, what about the little guy who starts doing really
well?

You know, the small newsletter publisher who puts out a
great ezine or fr-e report or whatever, and gets a lot of
subscribers and then wants to broadcast email to them on a
regular basis?

Let's say they start making $20,000.00 a year from their
ezine... are they now supposed to shell out 6-10% of
their earnings in order to get their messages through? (And
that's if they never get a fine!)

Do they have to be penalized for being successful?

Apparently so if this system gains widespread acceptance by
all the big ISP's and email service providers!

2. Second, what about the high potential for abuse at the
hands of unethical competitors and just plain jerks that
populate the Internet!

I know it might seem hard to believe, but there are psychos
out there who will sign up for a bunch of free email
accounts just so they can make trouble. (It's happened
to me before with some ass who signed up through my
web form and then reported me to spamcop).

Now, some idiot making waves with 100 email accounts won't
put a dent in the pockets of most big players in the email
arena... for them it'll just be a business expense.

But for the case of the "little" guy, fighting that
potential abuse and those fees could seriously cripple and
even kill a fledgling enterprise... and that, in my
opinion, is a serious problem.

In my opinion, all this is going to do is cut out the
little guy and make it easier for big companies to email
the hell out of the rest of us.

A small newsletter publisher will find it cost-prohibitive
to pay for the service, and some giant company will just
keep pumping the email out because they have the staff and
resources to fight the inevitable complaints.

And let's face it, if a big company is paying a $10,000.00
a year licensing fee plus posting a $4,000.00 bond, how
aggressive do you think the IronTrust people will really be
to get rid of them?

In my opinion, not very.

In conclusion: Despite my ranting, I actually think this is
a step in the right direction (albeit a wobbly, drunken,
and inconvenient step).

Something has to be done to fight spam.

However, at this point, this whole system has (in my
opinion) too many unanswered questions, especially for us
little guys.

Namely:

~ Do I really need to do this if I'm a little guy operating
and growing a newsletter?

~ What happens if I get unfounded spam complaints?

~ At what level does it make financial sense for me to do
  this?

~ What if my newsletter isn't a big profit generator...
am I supposed to give up the revenue I do create just to
  get my emails through?

To their apparent credit, Yahoo! is also trying to pioneer
a solution, but this one doesn't appear (at this point)
like it will cost publishers or subscribers any money (and
I like the sound of that).
<a href="http://antispam.yahoo.com/domainkeys ">http://antispam.yahoo.com/domainkeys </a>

But with so much at stake (on both sides), this issue is a
far cry from any satisfactory resolution.

Stay tuned for further updates as events warrant...

Jim Edwards here with a new article and an update :-)

This latest article (below) will get published in my
newspaper column tomorrow... but you get the scoop on it
today!

"More Cool Web Tricks" contains some awesome shortcuts,
quick searches, and other nifty things you probably didn't
know about that can speed up your surfing, improve
performance, and reduce frustration!

But a quick update first...

Last week I announced that May 3 I would re-release my
best-selling multi-media home-study course for one week
ONLY... and then I'm pulling it off the market.
http://www.MultiMediaSecrets.com/has-Jim-lost-his-mind.html

There was an absolute frenzy of questions and frantic emails
asking for more information as to why I'm doing it this way.

Bottom line, here's the deal:

1. I'm only making the product available for one week,
May 3-10, then I'm pulling it off my virtual "shelves."

2. The reason I'm selling it this way is to make sure
everyone gets fair warning about this incredible home-study
course. Last time I released it we sold out in 49 hours and
a lot of people missed out (and were not happy about it).

3. The order links are not live and will not work if you
click them. Sorry, but to keep it fair we can't let anyone
slide in early :-) The purchase links will go live at Noon
Eastern time, May 3rd. We will use www.time.gov as our
clock and the links will go live within +/- 5 minutes of
Noon on May 3rd.

4. We do not have an advanced notice list this time since
everyone is getting advanced notice. The sale starts at
Noon Eastern on May 3rd... so if you're interested in
getting a copy, I suggest you check out the website and
mark your calendar to be there Monday, May 3rd at Noon
Eastern when we open the doors.

5. Why have I decided to pull this home-study course off
the market after only making it available for a total of a
little over 9 days (which includes the 7 days next week)?
Go here to find out why...

By the way, if you like this article (below) and would like
to share it with your subscribers, add it to your
autoresponder sequence, or post it on your website, feel
fr^e! ;-)

Have a great week!

I Gotta Tell You Newsletter

If you ask most people what frustrates them most about the
Internet, many of them will tell you "It's the little
things!"

It seems like all the great tricks and tips that
make people exclaim "STOP! How did you do that?" never make
it into any manual (at least where I can find them).

My father (and co-author of "Turn Words Into Traffic")
calls it the "reverse oral tradition" of computing, where
children teach parents the survival skills of PC life.

Well, if you want to look good to your kids or buddies
around the water cooler, check out the following cool web
tricks.

~^~ Cool Google Tricks ~^~

Virtually everyone knows that Google.com ranks at the top
of most people's search engine lists, but it does a lot
more than just tell you where to find vitamins or
information on George Washington's wooden teeth!

Need a map to a specific location?

Type in the address, city and state of virtually any
location in the US, hit the search button, and Google
serves up several different map providers across the Web.

Want to know what software application a certain file goes
with on your computer?

Input the file name into Google's search box and a number
of reference sites will help you know exactly what purpose
a file serves.

I actually used this to feature to identify a piece of
"spyware" lurking on my computer.

Want to know who's calling you on the phone in the US?

You can just input the phone number on your caller ID or
cell phone display into the Google search box and get
information on listed numbers before your answering machine
can even pick up!

Log on to http://www.google.com/help/features.html for more
cool search features that harness the search power of
Google.

~^~ Text Zoom ~^~

Next time you can't see small text clearly on a website,
try holding down the "CTRL" key and then moving the scroll
wheel on your mouse up and down.

The text in your web browser (and some programs) will
increase and decrease in size as you roll the wheel back
and forth.

This little trick provides an excellent means of quickly
getting what you need from websites with tiny text.

~^~ Slow Surfing? ~^~

If your Internet Explorer web browser starts giving you
problems, you might want to clean up your "Temporary
Internet Files."

Most people don't realize it, but when you leave a web
page, it doesn't leave you!

Most of the time you keep a copy of websites you visit on
your hard drive and, over time, they build up.

This collection of old web pages can eventually cause your
surfing to slow to a crawl and even cause errors!

Here's one way to clear out those old files. Click your
"Start" button, then "All Programs," "Accessories," "System
Tools" and "Disk Cleanup."

After an initial check of your hard drive (which can take
some time if it's the first time you've ever launched the
utility), you can check the boxes of the files you wish to
delete.

To speed up your surfing, at a minimum, make sure you
delete the "Temporary Internet Files."

~^~ Surfing Shortcuts ~^~

To quickly cycle back and forth through a series of web

Here's a copy of the email I sent to my affiliates yesterday....

Jim Edwards here from www.ebookfire.com Affiliate Program
with an unhappy announcement :-(

Time is short... and this is so important... that you must
read every word of this update!

Unless we act now, there is a very good chance my affiliate
program (and your opportunity to earn affiliate
commissions) will go straight down the tubes.

Here's the story...

By now you've no doubht heard of the "CAN-Spam" Act
intended to cut down on all the unsolicited email on the
web.

What you probably don't know is that one of the aspects of
the law that's still under review by the FTC involves
"suppression" lists.

Now why should you care about this?

.... simple! Because, as I read it, this law will render
affiliate marketing useless for both merchants AND
affiliates.

Now, I'm not a lawyer (didn't play one on TV either), but
as I have read it -- and based on the information I have
gathered from reading and from people who know -- here's
the bottom line problem for all of us...

If one consumer tells one affiliate or merchant that they
never want to hear about a particular product (brand) EVER
again, then EVERY affiliate AND the merchant must remove
that consumer from their list whenever advertising that
product.

The question on your mind should be "How in the #$%^ would
that work?

Answer: Go to MySuppressionList.com and take a look... I
for one don't see how you or I will be able to deal with it.

If the FTC interprets CAN-Spam strictly and enforces the
use of "suppression" lists with affiliate programs it will
make it virtually impossible for us to do business!

Bottom-line: if they do this, I honestly don't see
how any of us will be able to market through affiliate
programs for much longer and I will most likely be forced
to shut down the eBookFire.com affiliate program :-(

You might be asking "Why haven't I heard about this before
and is it too late to do anything
